Coconut Sugar

Coconut is quickly becoming a darling of the natural food world. The boom in popularity of coconut oil, flour, dairy substitutes (milk, yogurt and ice creams), and more recently coconut water makes us not surprised to see a variety of coconut sugars on the market.

Oh coconut… what can’t you do?

There are definitely some advantages to switching to coconut. First, there’s the glycemic index score of 35 earning it a spot on the low glycemic sweeteners list (this means that you won’t get a blood sugar spike after consuming it, and that it is suitable for diabetics). Second, there’s a much greater content of vitamins and minerals in coconut sugar compared to its refined sugar counterparts. Finally, there’s the flavour. Coconut sugar has a subtle sweetness. You’ll have to use slightly more in your baking, tea or coffee, but the rich caramel notes make this sweetener a worthwhile addition to the pantry.

Give it it’s own mason jar in your cupboard!

INNO-Q-NOL Carnitine

Inno-Vite’s new INNO-Q-NOL Carnitine is currently the only L-carnitine-containing CoQ10 supplement available in Canada! It has been clinically studied in a group of patients with congestive heart failure and was shown to provide significant improvements in cardiovascular health.

Carnitine is a substance that helps the body turn fat into energy. Our bodies make it in the liver and kidneys, and store it in our muscles, heart and brain. It as been proposed as a treatment for many conditions because carnitine’s primary function is to transport long-chain fatty acids into the inner mitochondrial membrane for energy production.

There is evidence that both L-carnitine and CoQ10 can be used to reduce the symptoms of stable angina (chest pain), heart failure, peripheral vascular disease, and neuropathy associated with diabetes.

A great supplement to complement your heart healthy lifestyle!

PGX Daily

PGX is an effective weight management supplement by Natural Factors, a Canadian company that manufactures quality nutritional supplements.

We tend to be careful in our support of “diet” pills and supplements, as we appreciate there are numerous factors that play a role in weight and metabolism. A healthy rate of weight loss is 1-2 pounds per week, and ideally includes a balanced diet and moderate exercise regime. We are happy that PGX has been clinically proven to be effective, and recommend it to customers looking for a supplement to enhance their weight loss program.

How does it work?
PGX (PolyGlycopleX) is a non-starch polysaccharide (fibre) that has a high capacity to absorb water. PGX is taken with meals, and will absorb significant amounts of water, increasing the volume of the food you eat. This makes you feel full faster and feel full longer.

Essential Oil Crystals

CinnamonA new family of seasonings now available at our store.

Mint

These essential oil crystals are a new way to introduce the scents and thus tastes of plants and herbs into your foods and drinks.

Since most of what people perceive as “taste” actually results from their sense of smell adding a concentrated herb scent can pack a potent punch.

The human tongue can only detect 4 basic taste sensations. Sweet, Sour, Bitter & Salty and all the subtle flavours we appreciate comes from our sense of smell. This is an innate process that has been taking place since the beginning of human existence…cavemen smelled their food to determine if it was safe to eat. Today, people smell their food to determine freshness and to gauge if they will like what they are about to eat. As foods and beverages enter the mouth they release vapours that travel up through the retro nasal canal, past the nasal passages, until they reach the Olfactory Bulb where they are translated as flavour by the brain. Giving the person the perception that the aroma they are smelling is a flavour they are tasting.

Geranium

100% organic, salt-free, sugar-free, 0 calories, fat-free and with prebiotic benefits these essential oils are captured in pure crystallized blue agave pulp. 100% natural and 100% plant-based. An additional benefit is the polysaccharides in blue agave which are prebiotics in their natural state, this encourages the development of intestinal flora and helps regulate digestion.

Bergamot

Easy to use:
Sprinkle the Cristaux d’huiles essentielles¨ (Essential oil crystals) directly on to your preparations, as you would spices or seasonings. For hot dishes, prefer the last stages of cooking, or directly on to the plate before serving. The crystals can be also prepared in the form of vinegars, flavoured oils and syrups. A brilliant idea to aromatize water : directly in your glass or in water to cool in the fridge.

Powerful and economical: just a pinch between your thumb and index finger per person is enough, depending on what you are cooking, meaning there are roughly 500 individual doses per jar!

Unlike simple fragrances and commercially scented oils, aromatherapeutic essential oils are genuine reflections of the botanicals they were born of. They are teeming with an array of functional groups and active constituents, and have been used throughout the ages to encourage wellness, calm moods and inspire minds.

Long before the days of organized currency and pharmaceutical empires, their worth was well recognized by civilizations from virtually every corner of the globe. In their most primitive days, essential oils were presented as gifts, used for barter, and incorporated into many religious and spiritual gatherings.Frankincencse essential oil

Sapadilla Cleaning Products

by Anya Lomako

SAPADILLA cleaning productsIn recent years, consumer awareness about the presence of harsh chemicals in common household products has skyrocketed: people concerned with their long-term health and the sustainability of Canadian ecosystems created a demand for effective, naturally-sourced, non-toxic cleaning products. The market responded – with an overwhelming variety of natural cleaning supplies.

The latest cleaning product line that caught the attention of HF&M is Sapadilla, self-proclaimed to be the “nicest little eco-cleaners on the planet.” What makes these products so “nice” is the company’s commitment to simplicity, with a mandate and an ingredients list that is likely to meet even the most sensitive consumer demands.

Sapadilla aims for a simple ingredient list: their products feature 100% pure essential oil aromas, plant-based, biodegradable and non-toxic ingredients. We carry their Countertop Cleaner, Dishsoap, All Purpose Cleaner and Laundry Liquid in two aromas, Rosemary & Peppermint and Grapefruit & Bergamot.

The Countertop Cleaner is good for polishing kitchen surfaces, with lactic acid acting as a natural sanitizer. It is safe to use on finished wood, stone, linoleum and porous surfaces.

INGREDIENTS: Purified Water, Coco Glucoside, Ethyl Alcohol, Lactic Acid, Essential Oils of Peppermint, Rosemary, Clove and Sweet Orange, Potassium Sorbate, Sodium Benzoate

The vegetable glycerin-based dishsoap gets the grimy job done with a bit of warm water, while the lactic acid sanitizes to give your dishes a safe, clean shine.

INGREDIENTS: Purified Water, Coco Glucoside, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Glycerin, Lactic Acid, Ethyl Alcohol, Essential Oils of Grapefruit, Bergamot, Lemon, Litsea Cubeba and Sweet Orange, Xanthan Gum, Potassium Sorbate, Sodium Benzoate.

All purpose cleaner is a real multitasker, with antibacterial applications on wooden floors, walls and bathroom fixtures, and just about anywhere else. Dilute 1-4 tablespoons of it in water to use as a floor cleaner or use it concentrated with a natural scrubbing pad.

INGREDIENTS: Purified Water, Coco Glucoside, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Sodium Citrate, Lactic Acid, Ethyl Alcohol, Essential Oils of Peppermint, Rosemary, Clove and Sweet Orange, Xanthan Gum, Potassium Sorbate, Sodium Benzoate.

The Laundry Liquid is powered by borax and baking soda in addition to other natural cleaning agents. Because it contains no unnecessary or harsh additives, it is safe for children and individuals with strong chemical sensitivities.

INGREDIENTS: Purified Water, Alkyl Polyglucoside, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Sodium Carbonate, Sodium Borate, Sodium Gluconate, Essential Oils of Grapefruit, Bergamot, Lemon, Litsea Cubeba and Sweet Orange, Phenoxyethanol.

The company is part of the 1% For The Planet movement, donating a portion of revenue toward environmental preservation causes. As an ethical bonus, none of the Saspadilla products are tested on animals. Celebrating organic week

MEET THE PRODUCERS DAY will be held on 15th October from noon until store close at 75 BRIDGEPORT ROAD EAST, WATERLOO (OPPOSITE ZELLERS). This is a free event. Samples, demonstrations will be given and an opportunity to learn about your local suppliers and meet a few of their animals.

ABOUT ORGANIC WEEK 2011- Oct 15th – Oct 22nd

Canada’s National Organic Week is the largest annual celebration of organic food, farming and products across the country. Hundreds of individual events showcase the benefits of organic agriculture and its positive impact on the environment. Organic represents a vibrant alternative food system and an alternative option for clothing, personal care and cleaning products. We have so much to celebrate in Canada: A growing sector. Organic farming is a rare success story for Canadian agriculture with lots of new farmers, fair prices and growing markets in Canada and abroad. A transparent food source. Organic foods are the most regulated in Canada, offering Canadians a healthy source of food that isn’t just good for our health, but also good for the health of our environment. A source of food that is sustainable in the future. Organic farmers work with nature, not against it to produce food that doesn’t degrade soil quality, ensuring future generations will have access to the rich farmland that exists in Canada.

ABOUT CANADIAN ORGANIC GROWERS -PERTH WATERLOO AND WELLINGTON

Established in the early 1980s, COG Perth-Waterloo-Wellington was one of the first chapters of the organization. From its beginning through to 2003 the local chapter organized educational events and farm tours.

From 2003 to 2009, COG PWW ran Diversity Gardens, an organic demonstration farm. The gardens functioned as a site for workshops, a market, and pilot projects. The chapter continues to offer workshops, resources and other support to advance organic agriculture and organic food consumption in PWW. COG PWW has formed several partnerships over the years with like-minded groups. In 2004, we were a founding organizer with Foodlink in launching the first Taste Local, Taste Fresh event in Waterloo region. In 2006, we participated in consultations as one of the founding organizations for what would become the Waterloo Region Food Systems Roundtable. At the provincial level, we support a common voice for the organic sector by being a member of the Organic Council of Ontario.

PFENNING’S ORGANIC FARMS, BADEN

Vegetables and fruits

Pfenning’s Organic Farm is a grower/packer/shipper of certified organic produce. More than just a farm, ours is a “Quality of Life” business that takes a holistic approach to sustainability, and we live the organic concepts in our daily lives and business practices. Our farm is nestled in a curve of the Nith River just outside Baden, Ontario, offering us a peaceful setting in which to raise our children. We think “local first” and focus on family and community building. From that starting point, we develop market relationships where mutual respect is the foundation. At Pfenning’s we understand that education is key, and we are constantly learning and sharing what we learn with others. Our form of agriculture is the science and art of Organics and we have practiced it here in Canada since 1981. Although our family business spans three generations of Pfenning’s, our organic history started long before that in Europe.

Organic agriculture as we practice it works to manage the nutrient balance in the soil to achieve optimum plant health, which in turn provides the right balance of nutrients in the foods we harvest. Balance in the soil brings balance in the food and improves the health of the people eating it. Every bite counts.

On our farm today we seek to be a model of the sustainable production of organic grains, legumes and vegetables, with a comfortable balance between the tried and true and the new and modern. The farm is a busy hub of activity in which the most up-to-date equipment and methodologies ensure efficient packing and prompt, reliable distribution of fresh organic products to the health food stores, small grocers and supermarkets who are our customers. One of our interests is the re-introduction of the household grain mill to freshly grind the cereals we eat everyday. Our new packing shed brings in the latest technology in cooling to take the heat out of the storage areas and redirect it to make hot water and in-floor heating for the work area. This efficiency minimizes energy consumption by combining the need to cool some parts of the building and heat others.

MAPLETON’S ORGANIC DAIRY, MOORFIELD

In 1980 we (Ineke Booy and Martin de Groot) emigrated from Holland with our two children, Elske and Arwa (who works at Mapleton’s) and began working a 250-acre dairy farm. After farming conventionally
for 10 years, and having two more children, Egbert and Norman, we became concerned about the impact of conventional farming and how it affected our own health, the environment, the community, the welfare of the animals, and the health of consumers. We didn’t want to be commodity producers but rather food producers, in touch with the earth and our consumers.

After much consideration, the decision was made to become organic. The farm today consists of 600 acres of certified organic land, 75 milking cows and their offspring, chickens, turkeys, pigs, donkeys, alpacas, a pony, a number of cats and kittens, as well as an Austrian Shepard named Coco.

Mapleton’s Organic Dairy was born in 1999, when we began processing milk into organic ice cream, frozen yogurt, and fresh yogurt on the farm with a small retail store. In 2004 an ice cream café was added to better serve the steady stream of ice cream lovers. Today, Mapleton’s serves organic lunches and packaged organic products including dairy, meats, dry goods, and seasonal produce.

BAER’S VIBRANT FARMS, BADEN

Beef and Chicken

Vibrant farms is an organization representing many small grass fed organic beef farmers Where the prime focus is doing things in a way that your kids and their kids will be able to have the same quality of food, and ensuring we price it in a way that people can have access to it – because if we produce the best stuff, but its priced so high, it doesn’t benefit anyone’s health, and makes no difference in the world. Our farmers love what they do, and would farm this way whether they got paid a premium for it or not – in fact they were for many years before vibrant farms came around.

We are committed to putting NUTRIENTS back in the diets of our consumers!! This goes hand in hand with our sustainable food system philosophy, the more and more we “steal” from the soil, the less and less it will yield quality product, and our children and grand children will be eating more and more “empty food”, food that is void of the micro nutrients necessary to support immune health, essentially the building blocks of health and vitality!

LAEPPLE ORGANIC FARM, PETERSBURG

Potatoes, Pork, Eggs and Poultry, Grains,

Organic Farming is more than a job. It is a live style in which we, the Laepple family have grown into many years before emigrating from Germany to Canada in 1998. Fritz and Linda with Frieder, Florian, Gerdi, Freddy, Elisabeth and Roselinde are all involved in one way or another.“The way we farm and produce food has developed out of the need to provide our (large) family with healthy food in an economical way. The products that have grown out of this, we share with a growing number of customers concerned with health, quality and the environment… and we share the same concerns as our customers.”Our farm is certified organic by Pro-Cert Organic and the general principles are to protect the environment, minimize soil degradation and erosion, optimize conditions for biological productivity and promote a sound state of health. No chemical fertilizer, pesticides or herbicides are applied to the crops. Our animals are raised drug free without hormone implants and are fed grass, hay, grain and hay all grown on the farm. When you drive in our laneway you might have noticed the compost piles. They are the essential factor to improve the fertility of our mostly sandy soil. The old bank barn has been the home of many farm animals since it was build 150 years ago for J. Jutzi. It has seen some renovations and additions but the giant hand-hewn, white pine logs still hold the original design together. There are also still the ropes and wooden wheals inside with witch the horses used to pull wagons two stories up for unloading. Buy Local! Buy Fresh! is more than a slogan. It is a fact that this region provided healthy food in abundance to settlers and natives hundreds of years before trucks made it possible that every bite of food in average travels more than 800 km before it reaches the consumer. Our local customers help us move away from a food system that is heavily dependent on fuel consumption.

REROOT, HARRISTON

Reroot organic is a small, diversified farm producing local, organic and handcrafted food in the fertile soil of Wellington County. Established in 2007 on borrowed land, in 2010 reroot made the exciting move to our very own 70 acre farm in Harriston, Ontario. We grow certified organic produce, raise pastured poultry & Berkshire pork, produce free-range eggs and keep honeybees. Our products are available through our Community Shared Agriculture program, and at the weekly Elora Farmers’ Market and Minto Farmers’ Market in Harriston.reroot organic farm is a 70 acre property located on sandy-loam soil in Harriston, Ontario in the north part of Wellington County. Our farm is a small, diversified operation allowing us to produce a variety of high quality food and market it all locally. The farm consists of 3 acres of certified organic produce; lush green pastures, productive hayfields, a beautiful cedar bush, a small creek and a gorgeous old bank barn. We grow more then 40 types of vegetables and herbs; produce a wide-range of fruit; raise chickens, turkeys, laying hens and pigs outdoors on pasture; keep honeybees to pollinate our crops and produce tasty honey; and use our barn to offer shelter to our livestock. In the near future we plan to add an orchard, grass-fed beef cattle, and grass-fed lamb. We love to have visitors to the farm, just contact us to make sure we’ll be around.

Community shared agriculture or CSA is a food system model that is rooted in relationships between farmers, shareholders and the land. Based on the idea of mutual support, CSA farmers support their shareholders by producing quality food that is nutritious, fresh, and grown using organic principles; shareholders support their farmers by providing them with a stable income and local market for their products; and the land supports the growing of good food while in return being supported by ecologically sustainable farming methods. CSA is an alternative to the conventional system of food production and distribution where shareholders share in both the bounty and the risk of farming, while building connections with community, food, and the earth. Shareholders pay upfront for a share in the harvest before the season even begins. This allows us to purchase seeds and equipment needed for growing. Beginning in mid-June, shareholders visit the farm or another pick-up location once a week for 20 weeks to pick up their share of the produce that is available at that time in the season. Vegetables will have been harvested and washed earlier that day and will be ready for shareholders to bag and take home.

Protect your family against seasonal sniffles.

Fall and winter often bring changes that challenge our bodies in many ways:

  • increased exposure to germs that our children catch at school or daycare
  • germs that we catch at the office, at the gyms, in planes or on public transit
  • extreme temperature variations from mild and humid to frigid and dry
  • less sunshine, fresh air and outdoor physical activity
  • a lack of fresh food, rich in vitamin C and B-complex vitamins

Prevention is the first line of defence for good health throughout the cold and flu season. A. Vogel produce a comprehensive line of FRESH plant based remedies since 1923.  We now stock the full range of Echinaforce in our store, (from Echinaforce JUNIOR to Echinaforce Forte [Super strength] and we’ve discounted every item, so you can afford to prepare all your family for this cold season, enjoy fewer sick days from school or the office, reduce the need for antibiotics and prescription medications and keep your immune system healthy. From Echinaforce JUNIOR to Echinaforce Forte (Super strength) at 20% off.

We also have brought in their total range of treatments for symptoms should you ever fall sick: Sore Throat Spray made from Echinacea and Sage; Sinna capsules for acute and chronic sinus congestion; Soothing Cough Syrup using wild Spruce and

Bronchosen, derived from Ivy, Thyme, Liquorice root and Star-Anise to help with chesty colds. (This acts like an expectorant and spasmolytic.)

Nut and gluten free and satisfying your sweet tooth.

Gluten Free Fair Trade Espresso Cheesecake

Gluten Free Fair Trade Espresso Cheesecake

Sweets from the Earth company brings a strong commitment to nut, gluten allergies – and satisfying your sweet tooth. What is the hardest part of a food sensitivity diet? The answer is definitely dessert. For individuals with medical or ethical food restrictions, finding Vegan, Gluten-free and Nut-free desserts can turn into a grocery-store treasure hunt. And within these limitations, finding a tasty sensitivity-patented sweet is even more difficult.

Thankfully, the employees at Healthy Foods and More have discovered that Sweets from the Earth products suit a lot of food restrictions, including a commitment to no GMO, cholesterol and preservative free desserts. And the best part is, – the company’s products were diligently taste-tested by our employees, receiving dazzling feedback!

In addition, this Toronto-based company has a highly credible Gluten and Nut sensitivity testing track, – all their products are “lunchbox safe.” The sweets are processed in two separate facilities: one is located on Mulock Avenue, catering to Dairy, Egg, Peanut and Nut sensitivities, while the Cawthra Avenue facility is for a Dairy, Egg and Gluten-free environment.

Furthermore, according to the Sweets from the Earth company website, their ingredients supplies are “audited for their peanut, nut, gluten and wheat-free status” while the secret-recipe flours are tested by the batch for the presence of gluten. To an individual suffering from any of the above food intolerances, Sweets from the Earth treats provide a confident, delicious way to mix up their dessert routine.

Regular $4.25 Now $2.99

We want to know where our food comes from, don’t you?

Long before there was a USDA Organic label, Pacific Natural Foods decided to come up with their own program to ensure the integrity of their ingredients. In 1997 they established Certified to the Source. Today, they can tell you where every ingredient they use comes from. In many cases, they came from their very own farms or farms they know very well.

We love the aromatic flavor of a vine ripened tomato on a hot summer day.

And this soup is packed tomatoes, ripened by the sun. The warmth of summer is captured in its sweet, delicious nature. Pureed with a hint of cheddar cheese to balance out the sweetness of the tomato regular or with only half the sodium.

Serve cool and top with freshly chopped tomato, cucumber and mint for a refreshing summertime treat.

Also available

  • Creamy organic butternut squash, regular and low sodium.
  • Roasted red pepper and tomato
  • Cashew carrot and ginger
  • Spicy black bean

Organic Works Bakery

We’ve been carrying bread from Organic Works for a while and it  has gained a great reputation within the store. It’s AMAZING.

Finding good gluten free bread has always been a challenge. Many gluten free products have dairy and eggs making them off limits to those with other allergies as well as our vegan friends. This has all changed!
Organic Works bread is made with organic ingredients and is gluten, dairy, egg & even nut free. Its incredible flavour and texture made it an instant hit with store staff and customers. This is the bread you’ve been waiting for to make a sandwich with – No defrosting or toasting needed. It’s really, really good.

Pukka Teas

Tea is one of those things we’re picky about. We try to choose teas that are unique, are made with better environmental and ethical standards, and use high quality ingredients.

The newest member of our tea selection is Pukka Teas. These blends are based on Ayurveda (“the complete knowledge for long life” – a system of traditional medicine native to India) and the belief that organic herbs can have a beneficial effect on health and longevity. Like many great companies, Pukka started out small. What was just two passionate people has grown into a small company producing award-winning teas, and sources ingredients from ethical and sustainable growers.

PRANA Snacks

I am constantly on the hunt for perfect snack foods.
I’ll admit my criteria has toughened up over the past few years, but a few basic snack food needs have stayed the same:

1. Is it healthy and delicious?

2. Can I bring it to work, on a road trip, hiking, or sneak it into a movie theatre?

3. Can I share it? We each know an increasing number of people with food sensitivities and it’s important that good food is accommodating to as many people as possible!

Biocard Celiac Test

Celiac disease affects an estimated 1 in 100 Canadians, and about 95% of those affected are still undiagnosed. Celiac disease is a condition triggered by gluten, a protein found in wheat, rye and barley. The body reacts to gluten by damaging the lining of the small intestine, resulting in reduced ability to absorb nutrients from food. (Watch our video)

The Biocard Celiac Test is a Health Canada approved diagnostic screening test for celiac disease with results in just 10 minutes! It uses a finger prick whole blood sample  to detect the presence of antibodies; an indicator that the body is having an immune response to gluten. It is important that you are consuming gluten on a regular basis – a gluten free diet will interfere with the accuracy of the diagnosis.

Joël’s Coffee

Joël Béland’s breezeway smells of freshly roasted coffee beans. When I first walked in to check out his micro-scale roasting set-up, I was instantly overcome with the warm aroma. To me, the smell of coffee has always had relaxing and welcoming qualities – the smell of simple, satisfying indulgence. Joël roasts coffee on his family farm in Clarence Creek, Ontario where they produce organic vegetables, a few chickens and eggs, honey, handmade soaps, and a small number of berkshire pigs. They also operate a community supported agriculture (CSA or Food Box) program. (Visit the farm website).
